CHENNAI: A man was arrested at the airport while trying to pass off VHF transceivers and similar equipment as cameras, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials said on Saturday.

The items seized from the man included electronic goods, navigational and marine communication equipment like marine transceivers, and navigators worth Rs 11 lakh, DRI's Additional Director General P Babu said here in a release.

Acting on a tip-off, DRI officers intercepted the man who had arrived here from Singapore yesterday. He had said that the goods brought by him were cameras worth Rs 1.25 lakh.

However, on examining his baggage, navigational and marine communication equipment were found. Some of the equipment required a licence for import under the foreign trade policy, he said.

During interrogation, the man said he had procured the goods in Singapore and they were to be handed over to a person in Chennai. He claimed he was not aware of the use of the equipment. The man also said he had made about 70 trips to Singapore since 2002 and brought electronic goods for the same person, Babu said.
