KUALA LUMPUR: Stand-in captain Michael Hussey smashed a gutsy career-best 109 to steer Australia to 273-9 against the West Indies in their DLF Cup one-day match on Monday.

Hussey, who averaged a mind-boggling 77.06 from his 31 one-day innings before Monday, came to the crease with Australia struggling on 64-4 off 18 overs to pilot his side to a score they can defend.

It was his maiden one-day ton. He was aided by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who contributed a quick-fire 70 -- also a career-best -- as they let rip in a partnership worth 166.

Ian Bradshaw was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-35 off his 10 overs.

The other bright spark for Australia was Matthew Hayden, who scored 49 after a year away from the international one-day game.

Australia has been fiddling with its team selection ahead of the Champions Trophy and Ricky Ponting decided to rest. Hussey won the toss in his first ever game as captain, electing to bat on a hot day.

Hayden opened with Simon Katich and both were tentative. Katich was the first to go, run out for 22. The left-hander gave himself room for a drive through extra cover and the batsmen ran an easy two but Katich wanted the third. He charged back but Hayden stood his ground as the throw came in from Bradshaw.

The dismissal brought in Shane Watson. The all-rounder has had a good tournament so far, taking four wickets in his first game and knocking 79 in his second, but his luck ran out Monday.

He lasted just seven balls before Brian Lara caught him at cover for nought as he attacked a Jerome Taylor delivery.

The wild-haired Andrew Symonds managed only eight before he slashed at a Bradshaw ball and was caught by Dwayne Smith.

Bradshaw then tempted Michael Clarke (1) to throw his bat and he was caught at slip by Chris Gayle, leaving the Aussies in trouble when Hussey took the field.

At the other end, Hayden was knocking ones and twos but boundaries were hard to find and he fell one short of his 50, patting a Dwayne Bravo ball to Taylor for an easy catch.

Hussey was joined by Haddin and they upped the tempo, lashing out late in the innings with seven huge sixes between them before Haddin fell with three balls left.

The game got underway an hour early to allow more time to finish the match in the event of rain, which has spoiled two of the three DLF Cup games so far.
