KOLKATA: More than 35 per cent polling was registered in the first five hours of by-polls to three Lok Sabha and one assembly constituencies in West Bengal.

"Polling was going on peacefully with voters turning out in large numbers. There is no report of any untoward incident from anywhere", state's Chief Electoral Officer Debashis Sen said.

The polling began at 7:00 am this morning amid tight security.

By-elections were being held in Malda, Purulia and Katwa Lok Sabha constituencies and in Bongaon assembly seat.

In all 15 candidates, two in Katwa, five in Malda and eight in Purulia, are in the fray, while there are five contestants in the Bongaon assembly constituency.

By-election to Malda and Katwa have been caused due to the deaths of veteran Congress leader A B A Ghani Khan Chowdhury and Mehboob Jahedi of CPI-M respectively and that in Purulia following the resignation All India Forward Bloc MP Bir Singh Mahato who was convicted in a criminal case.

Trinamool Congress MLA Bhupen Seth's death necessitated the by-election in the Bongaon assembly seat.

Sen said that 70 companies of para-military forces besides armed police, Rapid Action Force, Eastern Frontier and District Armed Police have been deployed for the by-polls.

Altogether 5,000 police personnel are on duty in 250 sensitive booths.

“West Bengal's border with Jharkhand has been sealed and nine checkposts have been set up in view of the by-elections,” official sources said.
