TORONTO: Emilie Mondor, who competed for Canada in the 5,000 metres at the 2004 Athens Olympics, has been killed in a car accident, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced. She was 25.

Mondor, the 2003 and 2004 Canadian champion in her specialty, was involved in the accident on Saturday afternoon near Hawkesbury, Ontario.

The native of Mascouche, Quebec, finished 17th at Athens at 5,000m and at the 2003 World Championships in Paris she was 12th in 14min 59.68sec to become the first Canadian woman to crack the 15-minute mark in the event.

Mondor missed most of the 2005 and 2006 seasons because of a bone condition similar to osteoporosis, but had started training to run marathons and was set to make her debut in the event on November 5 at the New York City Marathon.

"Emilie was known for being extremely disciplined, focused and driven," said Canadian Olympic Committee athlete relations director Marc Gelinas yesterday.

"Emilie exhibited great potential and her best was yet to come. Her loss is immeasurable and will be felt throughout the entire Canadian sport community."
