DAMASCUS: The response of the United States to the September 11, 2001 attacks amounted to "state terrorism," the Syrian government daily Tishrin said on Saturday.

"The events of September 11, 2001 were the most horrible terrorist act that the world has seen since the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but what America does against people today has exceeded terrorism," the newspaper said in an editorial.

"The wars and the destruction" that followed the attacks of September 11 "exceeded this in terms of terrorism and of the number of victims," it continued.

Those who carried out these attacks were a "handful" of people "who represent no state or even party, whereas what the American administration did is the worst type of terrorism since it represents state terrorism," said the newspaper.

Syria and its main regional ally Iran are themselves blacklisted by the United States as state sponsors of terrorism for their links to Palestinian militant groups and Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah.
