UJJAIN/NEW DELHI: Widening its probe into professor HS Sabharwal's death in violence during college polls in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh CID has zeroed on nine persons, including two BJP corporators.

Those persons short listed by CID for recording their statements were BJP corporators Sonu Gehlot and SN Chouhan, BJP leader Sanwar Patel, Bhalu Bhadoria, Hemant Dube, Rizwan Choudhry, Pankaj Mishra, Vishal Rajoria and Sudhir Yadav, official sources said.

Two ABVP leaders Sashiranjan Akela and Vimal Tomar have already been arrested in connection with the incident. A local court sent Tomar to judicial custody till September 15 after his police remand expired.

As the news of CID deciding to question the two BJP corporators spread, a large number of party workers laid a siege of Dewas police station in protest on Sunday night.

In New Delhi, Prof Sabharwal's son Himanshu petitioned National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking a CBI probe into the circumstances leading to his father's death saying he had "no faith" in the local administration.

"We want the state government to hand over the case to the CBI for a fair probe as we have no faith in the local administration," Himanshu Sabharwal told reporters here after filing the petition with NHRC.

In a development related to violence at Madhav College, four NSUI workers Sandeep Lote, Jitendra Parmar, Vinod Chourasia and Amit Rai were arrested for rioting and violence during the college elections and were later released by a court on surety of Rs 10,000 each.

Under attack for his remarks describing the death of Sabharwal as an "accident", Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met Governor Balram Jakhar on Monday and apprised him of the progress in the CID investigations into the death of Sabharwal and the violence at Madhav College.

Jakhar, who had voiced concerns over the episode, said while the guilty should not be spared, innocent people should not be harassed by the police while probing the incidents.

Political activism by rival camps over Sabharwal's death intensified on Monday with Youth Congress workers taking out a silent march and courting arrests pressing for a CBI probe into Sabharwal's death and ABVP activists going for day's hunger strike in Bhopal demanding withdrawal of "false" cases against its leaders.

Congress has called a state-wide general strike tomorrow coinciding with the Teachers' Day tomorrow as a "black day" to protest Sabharwal's death.

In order to maintain law and during the bandh, elaborate security arrangements were made and additional force was summoned from neighbouring districts, official sources said, adding closed circuit cameras were mounted at every square and police plan to conduct flag marches.

On the other hand, ABVP announced the holding of felicitation functions for teachers across the state and a meeting to condole Sabharwal's death on Tuesday.

ABVP leaders also demanded withdrawal of murder charges against Akela, President of the state student's outfit, and Tomar, its General Secretary, whose offer to step down from their posts till they were acquitted, was accepted by state party President Kailash Sharma.
