PUNE: A student of the BJ Medical College was hospitalised due to a renal problem following alleged ragging, official sources said on Monday.

Akhilesh Shukla, 17, a first year MBBS student, hailing from Raipur, who had recently joined the college, is on dialysis due to the problem caused by alleged sit-ups forced by seniors at the college hostel in the last week of August, they added.

An FIR has been registered on the basis of a statement given by Akhilesh, admitted to the intensive care unit of Sassoon General Hospital.

The student's father has reached Pune and is with his son.

The college authorities suspended a senior student on the basis of a report submitted by a committee that probed the incident.

"The anti-ragging committee of the BJ Medical College, which probed the incident, has found second year MBBS student Nikhlesh Sahu prima facie responsible for the condition of Shukla. Therefore, besides suspension from the college, Sahu has also been removed from the hostel," college dean VL Yemul said at a press conference.

Sahu, who is from Kanpur, was admitted to Sancheti Hospital for an orthopaedic problem.
