KABUL: At least two rockets were fired on Sunday into Afghanistan's main international airport, which also serves as a main air base for NATO troops, but no one was hurt, police and the alliance said.

The rockets landed near the perimetre of the airport but did not cause damage or casualties, airport police chief General Aminullah Amarkhil told reporters.

"Two rockets were fired. There were no casualties," the general told reporters.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the attack but said three rockets had landed in the confines of the airport.

Amarkhil blamed the attack on rebels from the Taliban movement or those loyal to former prime minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who is fighting alongside the Taliban against the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.

Several rockets have been fired into Kabul -- home to thousands of ISAF troops, Western diplomats and aid workers -- in the past week but none have caused casualties or significant damage.

It is unclear who is behind these failed attacks, although some officials point to the Taliban, who target foreign and Afghan troops with regular deadly attacks mostly in the south and east of the country.
