PATNA: The Bihar government’s desire to revive the old glory of Nalanda, the ancient seat of learning, is likely to be fulfilled now. Buddhist countries like Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam have come together to offer a proposal to set up an international university at Nalanda. The proposed university would be the first-of-its-kind in the country and it would impart teaching in various disciplines, including theology and philosophy of Buddhism.

A delegation from these countries had already met the Bihar chief minister and senior officers of the education department a couple of months ago with the proposal. The state government on its part has initiated the process of land acquisition for this university. The government, after getting the approval of the cabinet, sanctioned Rs 9.5 crore to the District Magistrate of Nalanda on August 10 for acquiring the land. Cabinet Secretary AK Chauhan said that it was just the beginning.

More funds would be given to the DM, Nalanda, as 400 acres of land need to be acquired for the proposed university, Chauhan added. He said that negotiations with Japan and other Buddhist countries were on, but they had not reached a final stage. “However, the state government had decided to go ahead with the project, even without financial help from the Foreign countries,” he said. The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government started seriously considering the proposal to set up an International university in Nalanda following a suggestion from President APJ Abdul Kalam. Kalam, during his visit to Bihar soon after Nitish Kumar became the chief minister, had presented a document ‘Vision Bihar-2015’ to the state government.

In this document, he had suggested many development schemes to bring the state at par with other developed states of the country. One of the suggestions was to build an International University in Nalanda which could impart teaching in religion as well as modern and technical education. Besides its historical importance, Nalanda also happens to be the home district of Nitish Kumar.
