BAGHDAD: At least 14 people were killed and 45 wounded Monday when a suicide bomber blew up a vehicle at the compound housing the Iraqi interior ministry in Baghdad, security sources said.
Eight of the dead and 17 of those wounded were police commandos guarding the ministry building, they said.
The bomber struck just as Interior Minister Jawad Bolani was due to hold a meeting with police chiefs from all of Iraq's 18 provinces, and one day after a series of insurgent attacks killed 62 Iraqis.
Reports said that the army and police immediately cordoned off the area at the site, while the ministry's guards were seen shooting in the air to push back the crowd rushing to the scene.
