NEW YORK: The body of an Indian Sikh youth who drowned in Lake Oroville, California, last week is yet to be found.

Rescue efforts are continuing on a war footing to trace the body of Kuldeep Singh, 22, who drowned while on a boating trip on Aug 17 with his family, according to reports.

Sonar equipment and helicopters have been pressed into service. The recovery effort is being coordinated between County Sheriff's office and California state parks.

Recollecting the fateful day, Bobby, one of Kuldeep's relative who was with him, said they had planned to enjoy the day on the lake. The family hired a large boat and set out along with 23 other tourists.

"When the boat reached the middle of the lake, Kuldeep wanted to float on a floating cushion which was tied to the boat," Bobby said.

While Kuldeep was in the water holding the rope, the boat began pulling him slowly when suddenly the rope came apart and Kuldeep lost his balance and slipped into the water while the boat moved away from him.

"We tried to get the boat in reverse to back up to get him and the boat stopped working. We couldn't back it up. I saw him in the water and he called out 'help' three times and then he went under the water," Bobby said. Kuldeep never resurfaced. Everything happened very fast, he added.

Everybody on board tried calling 911 from their mobile phones but unfortunately the lake was out of service area.

When ultimately the emergency team arrived at the spot of the accident they could not find the body. It was too late.

Now the Singh family is trying everything they can to find Kuldeep's body to send it home to his mother in India.
