Tagore wrote Vande Mataram, says Mamata Banerjee

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday stunned the Lok Sabha when she said, “Vande Mataram is our national song. It is written by Rabindranath Tagore.”

While other MPs sat stunned, CPI’s Prabodh Panda pointed out, “Tagore has written our national anthem and Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.”

However, an unfazed Banerjee continued, “It does not matter who has written it. We do not look into who has written the national anthem, national song or ‘Saare Jahan Se Achchha’ (by Mohammed Iqbal) - We all love the songs.”
