NEW DELHI: The resignation of TRS ministers K Chandrasekhar Rao and A Narendra comes as the biggest blow to the UPA coalition which completed two years in office in May.

This is because Rao and Narendra have parted ways with the Manmohan Singh government as also the alliance agitated over the 'non-progress' in formation of separate Telangana state, a demand on which the Telangana Rashtra Samithi was born.

So far the exit of ministers at the Centre, may it be Shibu Soren sometime back or Jagdish Tytler and Natwar Singh as also Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav, was due to court cases, commissions of inquiry or being indicted by some probe panels.

The exit of the TRS ministers, therefore, is of a different category and so a setback to the coalition headed by Congress.

The Congress had no option but to remain a silent spectator in view of the fact that a sizeable section in Andhra Pradesh was dead against any division of the state and Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy emerging as their leader.

The recent panchayat polls in Andhra saw TRS losing ground in Telengana itself which was a morale booster for those against dividing the state.

Besides, the Left parties opposition to separate Telengana had cooked the goose of the TRS demand given the fact that the Marxists were the key outsiders whom Congress would not afford to antagonise.

Rao and Narendra also failed to make any impact in the UPA as regard their demand and their performance as ministers.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunshi described the resignation as "very disappointing" and unfortunate" and hoped that they would not hobnob with "communal parties."
