BEIRUT: Lebanese Defence Minister Elias al-Murr said on Saturday he might seek to halt the deployment of troops to the south if the United Nations did not clarify its position on an Israeli raid in the Bekaa Valley.

Helicopter-borne Israeli commandos launched the raid against a Hizbollah bastion at dawn on Saturday. The army said it aimed to disrupt weapons supplies to Hizbollah from Syria and Iran.

"If I don't receive clear answers today at 5:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) from the United Nations, I may have to ask the cabinet at the beginning of next week to halt the army deployment in the south," Murr told reporters.

Two UN envoys arrived in Beirut late on Friday and were due to meet Murr at around 5.30 p.m.

The United Nations has so far taken no stance on the raid. In a statement on Saturday, it said it was not in a position to do so because its troops were in the south of the country, not the eastern Bekaa Valley where the raid took place.

Lebanon's prime minister earlier described the raid as a "naked violation" of the UN-backed truce that this week halted Israel's 34-day war with the Shi'ite Muslim group.
