JERUSALEM: Israeli troops shot five Hizbollah gunmen, killing at least one, in southern Lebanon on Monday after a truce went into effect, the Israeli army said.

An army spokeswoman said soldiers in four separate incidents believed they were under threat from the gunmen and opened fire.

She said five Hizbollah fighters had been hit by Israeli gunfire and troops could confirm the death of one of them.

They were the first casualties since the UN-brokered ceasefire went into effect at 0500 GMT.

The Israeli army had said before the ceasefire that its troops would stop offensive actions but would defend forces deployed in southern Lebanon.

Israeli forces entered Lebanon after Hizbollah guerrillas kidnapped two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid on July 12.
