SURAT/VADODARA/AHMEDABAD: As central Gujarat faced a fresh threat of floods on Saturday, water gradually started receding from Surat. The living are now left counting the dead. Heavy rains continued to lash central Gujarat and another eight lakh cusescs of water was released from Kadana dam into the Mahi river.

At least six lakh more people have been evacuated from the low-lying regions. Around 1.5 lakh cusescs of water was released from Dharoi dam into Sabarmati river, flowing through Ahmedabad.

The Sabarmati river is flowing close to the danger mark, submerging the reclaimed land for the ambitious Sabramati Riverfront Development Project. There were fresh rumours in Ahmedabad about the city being hit with flash floods. Officials rubbished these rumours. Chief Minister Narendra Modi is taking a keen interest in the exact amount of water being released from all the dams of the state.

In Surat, thirty-five more dead bodies were recovered from the debris of Rabia flats, the building that had collapsed two days back. The death toll in the incident has now risen to 36, and local residents say the toll could easily top hundred. Rabia flats, a four-storey building located in Rander area of Surat, the worst-hit in the floods, had collapsed on Thursday morning. Sixteen people were saved by a rescue chopper, while dozen others were washed away by the gushing flood waters. One of the victims died while undergoing treatment.  The administration had downplayed the incident, saying all inmates of the building had been rescued. However, a total of 35 bodies were recovered from under the debris in the last 24 hours.

M A Sheikh, a resident of the area, said, "We had informed the fire brigade and had even approached several government officials seeking help for residents of Rabia Flats. However, no help was provided, which has resulted in the loss of 36 lives so far." Sheikh also alleged that no food packets or relief material reached their locality during the floods and accused the administration of inaction.
