Security has been stepped up at airports across India following the London plot. “Various measures have been taken to foil a terror attempt,” said Vertul Singh, CISF assistant commandant in charge of security at Delhi airport.

Passengers flying to London have been asked to report at least four hours ahead of departure time. No hand baggage is being allowed on flights to London.

The entry of visitors has been stopped and anti-hijack measures have been implemented. “All cabin baggage on specific flights is being checked manually and surveillance inside and outside the airport has been increased,” Singh said. “We are rounding up anyone spotted loitering. Light machine-gun-mounted vehicles and quick reaction teams have been pressed into service.” Even authorised vehicles entering the operational area are being checked.

Dustbins are being cleared every 30 minutes and their contents checked. Anti-sabotage checks are also in place. Plainclothes CISF men have been told to watch out for unattended baggage.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said airport security had already been tightened after 11/7. He added that all airports around the country are now on high alert.
