BEIJING: A bar in East China is offering their staff as punching bags to stressed out customers who want to give vent to their anger or frustration at a price.

The 'Rising Sun Anger Release Bar' in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, allows customers to beat up staff, smash glasses, shout and scream at a cost. If these anger management techniques don't work, they will also receive psychological counselling.

Wu Gong, 29, from neighbouring Anhui Province who set up the bar in April, said he got inspiration from similar bars in Japan, but felt a personal need for such a service after his experiences as a migrant worker in Guangdong Province.

The bar employs 20 well-built men in their 20s and 30s who can withstand the paid assault on them. Customers can specify how they want the models to appear -- even dressed as women-- and then they are free to give them a sound beating.

The bar charges 50 to 300 yuan (6.25-37.5 US dollars) from customers in accordance with their demands. Wu said that as of now, most customers were women, especially those working in service and entertainment companies or in massage parlours.

But public opinion is divided over the bar. "Pressure in today's society comes from just about anywhere, from family or from work, from your boss or from your girlfriend. We get no place to vent anger. The idea of beating someone decorated as your boss seems attractive," said Chen Liang, a salesman.

The city's industrial and commercial administration bureau said Wu's bar has been registered as a dancing venue and there is no mention in the licence about anger release.

"If he applied for the business of anger release we would not give permission. It has never been listed as a proper business in this country," an official said.
