Twenty-six crores fifty-eight lakhs eighteen thousand two hundred and sixty three. That is the amount that is due from various public schools in the Capital to the government, thanks to the old system of property tax assessment.

Almost all these schools come under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

At the end of the financial year 2004, the MCD switched over to a new system of assessment of property tax. Under this system, taxpayers have to calculate their property tax and file self-assessment returns and pay property tax accordingly.

Interestingly individual schools owe money to the tune of Rs2 crores or more. More than 63 schools come under this new act and nobody has submitted any details whatsoever. The MCD may take action against these. The measures that may be taken are the issuance of demand notice; show cause notices and attachment of bank accounts, rent and property.
