PESHAWAR: Pakistani forces in a restive tribal area on Thursday recovered a radar system belonging to the US-led military, which had been stolen during transit to Afghanistan, officials said.

The system was recovered in a raid on a house near the town of Landi Kotal in Khyber tribal agency and three people had been arrested, local administrator Riaz Khan Mahsud told reporters.

Paramilitary troops launched the raid after people living in the house fired at tribal elders who went to negotiate the return of the stolen equipment, Mahsud said.

The radar would soon be sent to the main US-led coalition base at Bagram in Afghanistan, he added.

Landlocked Afghanistan depends on Pakistan for the transportation of imported goods.

Much passes through the semi-autonomous tribal areas, where Pakistani forces have killed or captured hundreds of militants who fled Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban in late 2001.
