NEW DELHI: Twentyfour Delhi Police personnel, including three Sub-Inspectors, have been arrested this year on criminal and corruption charges, government said on Tuesday.

The charges framed against them include murder, attempt to murder, rape, molestation and corruption, Union Minister of State for Home S Regupathy informed the Lok Sabha.

While one Sub-Inspector facing rape charges and two Assistant Sub-Inspectors accused of corruption were dismissed from service, others have been placed under suspension as investigation against them was progressing.

He said corruption and criminal cases against Delhi Police personnel have shown a decline last year because of various steps initiated by the force.

"Fiftynine criminal and 27 corruption cases were registered in 2005 as against 81 criminal and 42 corruption cases registered in the previous year," he said in a written reply.

The steps taken to prevent corruption include surprise checking by senior officials, keeping a watch on personnel of suspicious character, transfer of men of criminal disposition to non-sensitive posts and stringent legal and departmental action against those found involved in criminal activities, he said.

Delhi Police has also set up Public Grievances Cells in all districts, stepped up surveillance by the Vigilance Branch and maintenance of register of complaints besides giving general public the facility to lodge complaint against corrupt officials through e-mail, he added.
