The Indian embassy in Tehran has said it was not aware of Dr Tanveer Ansari’s visit to the Irani capital. Ansari, a Unani doctor, was arrested by the Anti-terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly being party to the 11/7 conspiracy. He is also accused of visiting Tehran via Pakistan to receive training at a Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) terror camp.

“Several Indians, who come here as professionals or to work with multinational companies, register with the embassy so that they can approach us in the hour of need.
But it is not mandatory for all Indians to do so,” said an Indian diplomat from Tehran over the phone.

“There are about 450 Indians, including students and their families, in the city of Qom doing Islamic religious courses. Many of them are from Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

“At least 12 students - mostly Shia Muslims from Kashmir - are doing professional courses in medicine and engineering here,” he said.

“The Iranian government gives them scholarships and students come through exchange programmes.” Ansari, who did his degree in Nagpur, is accused of having visited Tehran in 2004 on the pretext of personal work.

An ATS officer said Ansari allegedly went to Bahawalpur and Muzzafarabad in Pakistan by road to attend an LeT camp where he was taught how to operate AK-47 rifles, stenguns, grenade launchers and even stinger missiles. “Ansari knows how to handle explosive materials,” said Joint Commissioner of Police and ATS chief KP Raghuvanshi.
