DRASS: Seven years have passed since Captain Vikram Batra died while fighting Pakistani intruders here and his fiancee decided not to marry.

"He (Capt Batra) was to be married a few months after war broke out in Kargil. But destiny had other things in store and he died while fighting the enemy. Later his fiancee decided not to marry. She is like my daughter now," said GL Batra.

Capt Vikram Batra was killed in 1999 while trying to secure Point 4874 in Drass sector. A day before Vikram had caught the imagination of the whole nation when he displayed a placard inscribed with 'Ye Dil Mange More' after recapturing Point 5140.

For his exemplary valour, Vikram was awarded the country’s highest gallantry award Param Vir Chakra posthumously.

"I remember the day when he called me, saying I have captured a peak. I was a bit confused whether he has been captured by the enemy. But he immediately sensed my anxiety and said he has recaptured a peak from the enemy," said Batra.

However, his son's sacrifice has made Batra more determined. "Undoubtedly we miss our son, but at the same time we are proud that he laid down his life for the country. I feel the country is supreme and such moments inspire a generation," he said.

Col (retd) VN Thapar's story is no different. His 22-year old son Lieutenant Vijayant Thapar died while fighting Pakistani intruders in Kargil. His son's sacrifice has made him more determined.

"For the last seven years I have been visiting this place to pay tributes to my son. I even climbed to the rocks where he actually died. We have made a small memorial where we pay our respects," he said.

His son was also getting married to a girl. "She is now happily married to an Air Force officer. She even called me before I left for Drass," he said.
