KOLKATA: The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has ordered an inquiry into complaints of alleged sexual harassment of a male constable by a high-ranking IPS
officer.

"I have issued an order to the Director General of Police to probe the complaint made to me by the constable's wife," HRC Chairman Justice (retired) S K Sen told reporters here today.

The probe should not be conducted by anyone below the rank of additional director-general of police, according to the order.

Failing to get any response from top police officials to her repeated written complaints, Rakhi, the wife of constable Debashis Banerjee, petitioned the HRC on Monday, seeking its immediate intervention to save her husband from alleged sexual harrassment by Deputy Inspector General (Training) Gaurav Dutt.

Rakhi's petition alleged her husband had also been threatened with dismissal from service by Dutt.

Sen said the state police chief had been asked to submit the inquiry report within four weeks.

Police sources said Dutt had earlier been involved in alleged sexual harassment cases. Dutt and the DGP were unavailable for comment.

Rakhi's petition said her husband was subjected to rigorous physical labour "whenever he refused to compromise himself to satisfy the DIG's sexual gratification in his
bungalow".

At one point of time, she said her husband "had to be admitted to hospital". She alleged her husband was forced to undergo physical training by Dutt when he was ill.

She said her husband had confided to her that the alleged sexual harassment began in April and was continuing till now.

Rakhi's petition said her family life had been severely disturbed due to her husband's ordeal.
