I will not allow Mumbai to suffer again. I have learnt lessons from 26/7 and taken steps to address the systemic flaws that compromised the well being of our city last monsoon.

We are making strong and urgent representations to the Centre to expedite the mega city projects.

Indeed, changing the face of Mumbai and preparing it for a better tomorrow is on my personal agenda. It is also Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s dream project.

My government will ensure that we secure additional funds for Mumbai in the annual budget. I met Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy in Delhi to discuss projects under the NURM. The Centre has agreed to the Rs1,200 crore storm water drain scheme.

Priority will be accorded to vital projects such as augmenting the storm water drain network; widening  the Mithi, Poisar, and Dahisar rivers; and removing illegal slums that impede infrastructure projects. A task force has been constituted to tackle the problems of slum colonies.

Turning Mumbai into Shanghai will take at least three to four years as multiple infrastructure systems will have to be put in place.

But I wish to stress that paucity of funds will never be a hurdle. As residents know, the city generates the country’s largest revenue share, of over Rs36,000 crore, in the national exchequer.

I assure all citizens that neither the Union finance ministry nor the Planning Commission will come in the way of fund allocation. The Centre and PMO are sensitive to the city’s sufferings and will go the extra mile to help us.

The political will to improve the city is not lacking. I personally assure Mumbaikars of my government’s commitment to address the city’s problems.
