Operating out of a haveli, Indraprastha  is the oldest girls’ school in the Capital

NEW DELHI: Rarely is a school seen on a stamp, but Indraprastha Girls senior secondary school, in the Capital, has managed to get that honour.

Last week, the posts and telegraphs department issued a postage stamp in the name of the school, which was established in 1904.

Known as Delhi’s oldest girl’s school, it operates out of a haveli in the Jama Masjid area. It is from this school that the Indraprastha College, Delhi’s first girl’s college, was also conceptualised.

The alumni include Kamala Nehru, Kapila Vatsyayan and many more. The school, which is 102-years old, started with only seven students, and the haveli from which it still functions was also donated for the benefit of the girl child.

Incidentally, when the school started the purdah system was still prevalent and thereby the small beginnings. Today, the school has 520 students and is still considered to be one of the finest in old Delhi.
