KOLKATA: Heard of seabuckthorn? It’s a wonder fruit found in the cool climes of Ladakh. But, more importantly, it is emerging as a Rs 5,000-crore global industry, with China as the market leader.

The Rs 650-crore Indage Group, with interests in wines and hotels, which bought over the flagship Leh Berry drinks brand from Ladakh Foods last year, is looking to leverage this fruit to enter the food and beverages and cosmetics segment.

An investment of Rs 100 crore has been lined up over the next couple of years, according to M S Dhanota, president, Seabuckthorn Indage.

The key ingredient in the Leh Berry drink is seabuckthorn and the entire F&B expansion strategy is linked to it. The company will unveil mineral water, biscuits and confectionery and the entire range of juices — 100% juices, nectars and drinks - under the Leh Berry brand.

While the eight Leh Berry juice variants will be processed and packaged at Godrej Beverages & Foods plant in Madhya Pradesh, Indage is in talks with two leading biscuit manufacturers for outsourcing its entire biscuits and confectionery inventory.

The mineral water will be manufactured at an integrated manufacturing and R&D plant that is being set up at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh.

The Rs 40 lakh water processing unit is situated 9,000 feet above sea level for harnessing mountain spring water, said Dhanota.
