The Centre has asked the Maharashtra government to shed its complacency and get ready to avert post-terror problems that threaten to destroy the communal harmony in Mumbai.

Both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil have urged Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister RR Patil to prepare the administration to face tough task ahead.

Principal Secretary in chief minister’s office Umesh Sarangi said, “The immediate concern of the Centre is to avert communal trouble in Mumbai. As a result, the chief minister has personally taken the initiative to appeal to all political parties and peace committees to work for harmony.”

A high-level meeting of  Army, Navy, Air Force and the police was held at Mantralaya to review security in the city post-bomb blasts and increasing political activities. While the Congress and the NCP are engaged in blaming each other for leadership failure, Opposition parties,  the BJP and the Shiv Sena, have joined hands to turn public opinion against the government on terrorism plank.

The BJP has plastered Mumbai walls announcing the public meeting of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde said, “There is nothing politically incorrect about holding Modi’s meeting in Mumbai on anti-terrorism plank.” BJP senior leader Gopinath Munde said, “It is our duty to represent public sentiments and expose the government’s shortcomings in policy making.”

The Shiv Sena has taken a tougher stand after the bomb blasts. Its senior leaders Ramdas Kadam and Diwakar Raote blasted the Congress leadership for failing to crack against Bangladeshi infiltrators who they alleged were hand in gloves with Pakistan-backed terrorist organisations. RR Patil is repeatedly trying to impress upon political rivals that bomb blasts is a “guerrilla war” unleashed against India by terrorist organisations.

Spokesperson for Congress Hussain Dalwai said the the government should act tough against people like Mulayam Singh Yadav, Abu Azmi (both of the Samajwadi Party) and Narendra Modi.”
