WASHINGTON: Condemning the terror strikes in Mumbai commuter trains that left hundreds dead and injured, the US Senate on Friday expressed solidarity with India and moved a resolution to jointly "fight and defeat terrorism in all its forms".

The resolution, which was moved by the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Richard Lugar and the Ranking Democrat Joseph Biden, had the backing of 18 other Senators, Republicans and Democrats.

It expressed support to enhance strategic cooperation between Washington and New Delhi, with the goal of combating terrorism and advancing peace and security.

Both United States and India are multicultural and multireligious democracies "that abhor terrorism in all its forms and will continue to work steadfastly together to overcome terrorist ideology and establish peace and security", it observed.

The terrorists responsible for the Mumbai attacks, the resolution said, seek to disrupt the free, democratic and pluralistic lifestyle enjoyed by the people of India.
