MUMBAI: Tightening of security and thorough checks at Mumbai airport after Tuesday’s serial blasts caused 50 flights to be delayed by at least 90 minutes on Thursday.

Due to the alert at Mumbai and Delhi airports, random checks are being conducted on passengers, vehicles, and registered baggage. Union Civil Aviation Secretary Ajay Prasad told a press conference in New Delhi on Thursday that airports are the next potential targets.

“The alert means intensifying checks by doubling them, which is time-consuming,” said Sanjay Prakash, senior commandant of the Central Industrial Security Force.  All access points at the airport now have more security forces and equipment like closed circuit cameras.

Flights of private airlines like SpiceJet, Air Deccan, Air Sahara, Go Air, and Jet were delayed by 30 to 90 minutes, airport officials said. Indian and Kingfisher flights were delayed by 30 minutes.
