ROME: Former international star Roberto Donadoni was on Thursday named as the new coach of World Cup winners Italy, the Italian football federation said.

The 43-year-old Donadoni, who played for AC Milan and has been the coach of Livorno for the past few seasons, takes over from Marcello Lippi who stood down on Wednesday after Italy's World Cup final win against France.

Donadoni is highly rated but has limited coaching experience in Serie A, so filling Lippi's shoes is going to be his biggest challenge yet.

Under Lippi's stewardship, Italy, on a 25-game unbeaten streak, beat France on penalties in the World Cup final in Berlin after putting out hosts Germany in the semi-finals.

Donadoni will have to contend with the fallout from the trial into Italy's biggest match-fixing scandal with the verdict expected in few days.
