NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi was criticised for not having enough medical facilities in Amethi, with just one functional general hospital in the entire constituency.

It seems the young Congress MP has taken his role very seriously and has gone one step further in making sure the people of Amethi stay in not just good health but good shape too. The Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust has finished installing 10 gymnasiums in the area including Shahgarh, Musafirkhana and Amethi. “The idea was to introduce something like a health club for the people here. Right now the facilities are only being used by the boys and they pay a nominal fee for maintenance of the place,” says a source in Amethi.

The initiative taken by Rahul Gandhi who is a health freak himself was to ensure that the youth in Amethi get an opportunity to work out and stay fit. “We have already opened 10 centers and others are in the process of being opened. One will be surprised to see how the people here have taken to it. It is like providing them constructive recreation,” adds a source from the trust.

So even if the people of Amethi may still be struggling to have basic facilities like power, water and good roads, some of the youth will at least gain muscle power to fight the odds. “These are multi-gyms - essentially small exercise stations armed with a basic biker, chest press, bicep curls, and pulley press down for triceps and lat pull down for the back. One can use these for carrying out at least 12-13 sets of exercises,” adds the source from Amethi. About 10 more gyms are in the process of being set up and the total estimated cost of this project is Rs50 lakh.
