LONDON: Heather Mills, the estranged wife of Sir Paul McCartney’s has got support in her battle with the media from an unusual quarter – Yoko Ono, the widow of Beatle John Lennon.

Ono, who has been blamed by many Beatles’ fans for breaking up the band and taking Lennon away from his in-born talent, is angry at how the media has treated Mills since she and Sir Paul separated. “I think the attacks should stop with me,” Ono told a British newspaper. “I am an ideal reason for you guys to dislike me, for being Asian and a foreigner and for standing up for myself and for my work,” said Ono.

Despite her long battles with Sir Paul over song writing credits on behalf of her late husband Lennon, 73-year-old Ono claims she has cordial relations with the McCartney’s. “I send them Christmas cards and a congratulatory note when their baby was born,” said Ono.

Talking about the tabloid press’ attacks on Heather Mills and raking up rumours about her early life as a high paid call-girl and porn star Ono said “I feel so bad for them”. “Whatever it is that made it easier for you to make me a scapegoat is still there so leave them alone,” added Ono who is in London to oversee the mounting of three pieces of her art works in St Paul’s Cathedral.

Speaking at Trafalgar Square a few days ago for the International Widows’ Day organised by the Loomba Trust – a charity set up by a Punjabi businessman Raj Loomba – Ono said she and her son Sean were “still suffering” over Lennon’s death, and that society “must give widows a chance”.

In a bid to rebuild relations Ono has just invited Cynthia Lennon, the late Beatle’s first wife, and their son Julian to a Cirque du Soleil performance. Ono met Lennon in the 1966 while the pop star was still married to Cynthia, and Ono was blamed for wrecking the marriage and Lennon’s career with the Beatles.
