Rs 50 for one kilo tomato!

Tomato lovers are paying through the nose as the price of the vegetable shooting up from Rs 15 to 50 per kg in a matter of two weeks at the vegetable markets in Amritsar.

AMRITSAR: Tomato lovers are in a pickle with the price of the vegetable shooting up from Rs 15 to 50 per kg in a matter of two weeks at the vegetable markets here.

Most prefer doing without tomatoes which till about two weeks back was selling at around Rs 15 per kg and now burning a hole through many pockets due to its exorbitant price.

Traders here blame it on a severe lack in supply of the vegetable from other states.

However, not just the tomato, most vegetable prices here sky-rocketed, with consumers having no option but to purchase smaller quantities of items.

Onion is selling at more than Rs 10 per kg in the retail market while consumers have to shell out Rs 20 to buy a kilogram of lady's finger.

Cauliflower, the price of which was Rs 20 per kg 10 days back, is now commanding a price of Rs 35 per kg. Peas are being sold at Rs 40 per kg from the earlier Rs 30.

Brinjal and gourd cost Rs 18 and Rs 20 per kg each.   Potato prices have also increased to Rs 9 per kg from Rs 7 till a few days back. The cost of lemons, however, still stands at Rs 30 per kg.
