MUMBAI: The state government-appointed expert committee has recommended compulsory training for teachers to handle students with learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia.

The committee guidelines, which were presented before the Bombay High Court on Thursday, suggested conducting awareness programmes for school principals and teachers to identify students with learning disabilities.

The court had asked for the committee’s report while hearing a petition filed by Vincy D’Silva against the St Mary’s School, which had refused to promote her son suffering from a learning disability to the next class.

The school had prepared a list of recommendations that were whetted by the expert committee. Ruling out the suggestion that such students should opt for the more flexible National Institute of Open School, the committee held that such children should be included in mainstream schools. It has also suggested introduction of remedial education to help students with learning disabilities.

The panel said schools should provide certain facilities to aid students with learning disabilities free of cost. Apart from permitting 25 per cent additional time in exams, schools should take oral tests in the relevant subjects. The committee has recommended that such students should be permitted to take the help of writers during exams and use typewriters.

It has suggested that mistakes such as spelling errors, writing numbers in the wrong order, and poor diagrams should be exempted. Also, 20 grace marks can be given to students in each subject.
