NEW DELHI: The Income Tax notice served on the Bachchans is threatening to turn into a political storm, with the Samajwadi Party and the BJP taking up cudgels on behalf of the cine star. The Congress meanwhile has decided to distance itself saying it had nothing to do with the incident.

First it was Amitabh Bachchan’s sunglasses, then his wife and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya was asked to explain certain reasons for not filing Income Tax returns in 1984 as the director of Lotus Entertainment. Bachchans’ son Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, too, has come under scrutiny. The department is checking whether Abhishek had filed returns in the past six years.

The Bachchans were for many years personal friends of the Gandhi family, but all that has changed. The two families are not even on speaking terms and the Bachchans have now gravitated towards Amar Singh and the Samajwadi Party . Predictably the IT notices have taken a political hue and the SP and the BJP have accused the Congress Government of targeting the film star.

“They won’t achieve anything by gunning for the Bachchans. I am warning the government to lay off,” says UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The SP sent its cadres to protest on the streets and its leaders are hoping to cash in on the sympathy that Bachchans targeting is likely to evoke. The SP’s political managers also hope that the IT notice will provoke Amitabh to campaign for them in the forthcoming Assembly elections in UP.

The Congress meanwhile has distanced itself from the notices and charged the SP and the BJP of politicising the issue. “We have nothing to do with the notices. From time to time people get such notices, why this hue and cry. After all if everything is order, they can go and explain their case,” says Congress spokesperson Rajiv Shukla.

The BJP has also questioned the motives of the Congress led UPA government’s motive. Senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu said “We are surprised why one family has been identified for all kinds of action from the government. We maintain that no one is above law but point in question is that why only one family?”
