Veteran film director Hrishikesh Mukherjee was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Lilavati Hospital in Bandra on Saturday after he complained of respiratory trouble, it was learnt on Tuesday.

Doctors said Mukherjee, 83, was suffering from pneumonia, which coupled with his chronic renal failure, made his condition “very critical”.

He was put on a ventilator and “as of now, his vital parameters are normal,” Vaishali Rajpara, administrative officer, Lilavati Hospital, said on Tuesday night.

“Though he is in a stable condition, he is still serious. His vital organs may be stable, but we still have to look for infections. Besides, his age is also a factor in his response to treatment,” she added.

He is being attended to by nephrologist Dr Bharat Shah. Mukherjee has been undergoing dialysis at the hospital for the past one year.

The news of Mukherjee being admitted to the Lilavati was disclosed to the media only on Tuesday.

Mukherjee’s family is with him in the ICU. His daughter Neeru urged the media “to let us be in peace as this is a difficult time for the family”.

The hospital has not issued any health bulletin, giving rise to rumours about his condition.

Considering the contribution of Hrishi da (as he is fondly called) to Indian cinema, the number of Bollywood stars who visited him was few and far between.

In fact, there were only two visitors during visiting hours on Tuesday — yesteryear star Dharamendra and TV artiste Avtar Gill. Mukherjee has directed Dharmendra in some major hits like Satyakam and Chupke Chupke.

“It makes me very sad to see him unwell. My association with him has been from my childhood. I share a strong emotional bond with him and wish that he gets well soon,” he said.

Gill said, “He is much better and his mind is alert; he even smiled.”

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s directorial career started in 1957 with Musafir.

His last movie was Jhooth Bole Kawa Kate in 1999. He even directed some TV serials. Mukherjee has won several honours, including Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke award.
