VARANASI: Supporting the stand of Aamir Khan on the rehabilitation of the people affected by the construction of the Narmada dam, a social outfit on Tuesday staged a dharna here demanding release of the actor's latest film 'Fanaa' in Gujarat.

The protesters of Vishal Bharat Sansthan, comprising Muslim women, shouted slogans against the Gujarat government for not allowing the release of Khan's film in the theatres of the state in order to "punish" him for his rightful stand on the rehabilitation of the villagers and farmers near the Narmada dam.

The social activists, staging the dharna under the banner 'struggle for truth' lauded the film actor's stand on the issue of public concern and said Khan's concern for the farmers and villagers was praiseworthy.

The activists also wrote a letter to the BJP top leaders, including the Party President Rajnath Singh and Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, urging them to intervene in the matter and ensure the release of Khan's film in Gujarat theatres in deference to the right of freedom of expression enshrined in our constitution as was the case with Khan, vis-a-vis his comments on the rehabilitation of the farmers and villagers of surrounding areas near the Narmada dam.
