KOLKATA: Magical mystery tour, anyone? For the first time in India, there will soon be an institutionalised course on magic! And, not breaking the spell, in a couple of years, a full-fledged university on magical arts!

Well-known magician P C Sorcar’s company Indrajaal, has tied up with Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata to offer what is being regarded as the first-ever course on magic being delivered under an UGC-registered university.

The new course, conceived and structured by the master magician himself, if all goes well, is likely to commence from the new 2006-07 session itself. In fact, the great master has also coined a term for the course, “Dramagic”.

Speaking exclusively to DNA, P C Sorcar (Junior), said: “Magicians do not have supernatural powers. We merely use science, arts and psychology to create a surrealistic world. The aim of this course, as with any academic discipline, is to make the student of magic reach a level of awareness of the world around him.”

He further added: “The aim behind institutionalising magic is to eliminate superstitions and make people think rationally.”

Initially, there will be a paper within the “drama” course. Depending on the feedback, the university will take shape. However, it seems, the university will not merely remain in the realms of magic but become a reality since the response to the impending course has been overwhelming. The aim is to set up the university of magical arts in Kolkata.

In a land, where ancient shastras teach us that the “real” or physical world is actually “maya” or illusion, the initial course will comprise simple tricks to stress that people in general should trust their eyes only. “A politician’s speech is a good example of illusion and reality. We must learn to differentiate between the two!” jokes Sorcar. He adds that even school kids can enroll for this course. However, only graduates — from any discipline — will be eligible for the master’s degree, said Sorcar.

The course is geared towards helping movie makers, animators and others linked to the world of illusion and magic realism.

“Sci-fi, advertisements and animation movies lend themselves to magic,” indicates Sorcar.  Recalls S Ghorui, RBU registrar: “RBU had been the first university in India to introduce a full-flegded course on mime too.”
