Sensex ends 143.03 points up after crossing 11k mark

The Sensex for the second consecutive day closed high at 10,809 points, up by 143 points as compared to the previous close of 10,666 points.

MUMBAI: The Sensex for the second consecutive day closed high at 10,809.35 points, up by 143 points as compared to the previous close of 10,666 points.

Earlier, the Sensex opened stronger by 69 points at 10,735 points as compared to its last close, touching an intra-day high of 11,050  points.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) S&P CNX Nifty index, too, closed higher on Friday at 3,209 points up by 31.90 points, as compared to the previous close.

Earlier, Nifty went up by 100 points to a high of 3,277 points in the mid-morning session.  All the sectoral indices were in the green with the BSE Metal index gaining maximum of 3.54 per cent, BSE oil and gas index was up
by 1.14 per cent, BSE midcap index was up 2.47 per cent and BSE smallcap index was up by 2.60 per cent.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Tata Steel, HDFC, Cipla, Bajaj Auto, Larsen & Toubro, BHEL, Infosys, Hero Honda and ACC. L&T was up by 4.34 per cent to Rs 2,395 in the afternoon session buoyed up by the proposed bonus issue.

Among the top losers were ONGC, Wipro, Tata Power, Bharti Tele, TCS and Hindalco.

Even the presence of Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and the Union Commerce Minister Kamal nath could not boost the market to cross the 11,000 mark at the end of the day.
