The state government on Saturday approved  the National Textile Corporation (NTC)’s plans to set up an over 60-storey ‘India International Trade Centre’ to transform the city’s heartland into an international commercial hub. It will come up on the 12-acre defunct India United Mill No 6 located off Cadell Road at Dadar.

The decision was taken at a meeting between chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and union textile minister Shanker Singh Vaghela to discuss the development of the city’s defunct NTC mills. NTC proposes to put 10 more mills on the block.

Senior NTC and urban development department officials said while draft plans had already been submitted for approval to the civic body, the state has asked the NTC to carry out a study to assess its impact on the environment.

“The government wants to create employment opportunities by setting up a software park on a small portion of this land,” an official said. Planners said the Rs500 crore-plus project with its large seafront and convenient access was perfect to host a world-class convention centre, which can use twice the normal floor space index of 2.7.

A decision could not be taken on setting up a textile museum in India United Mill no 2 or 3. The NTC, which sold five mills including Apollo, Mumbai Textile and Kohinoor, has already handed over these two mills to the civic body as its share of open space.

The meeting also discussed issues like redeveloping chawls on mill lands. “The government should ensure that redevelopment of sick NTC textile mill lands is done along with giving 225 sq ft tenements to mill workers,’’ said NCP legislator Sachin Ahir, also the president of Indian National Trade Union Council.
