NEW DELHI: Kerala's chief minister-in-waiting V S Achuthanandan is wasting no time, it seems. On Friday, he said, "The first action of the new government should be to deal with all major sex scandal cases. That is the commitment we had given to the people during election campaigning."

The 83-year-old Achuthanandan, popularly known as "VS" arrived here on Friday to attend the politburo meeting on Saturday, which is likely to clear his name for chief ministership. Soon after his arrival, VS had a half-an-hour meeting with party general secretary Prakash Karat.

The UDF government had been rocked by a series of sex scandals and VS had been single-handedly taking up several such incidents, including moving the state women's commission and the High Court.

"The new CPM-led LDF government in Kerala would vigorously pursue investigations into all high-profile sex scandals and corruption cases," VS told reporters.

VS said the party registered such a tremendous win in the Assembly elections because of a groundswell of support from women.

"We were the ones who took up several cases of sexual harassment against women in the state. We will continue to fight for their dignity," he added.

Mounting a direct attack against Muslim League leader Kunjalikutty, who was absolved by a court in the ice-cream parlour sex scandal case, VS said the former minister lost elections because women voted against him.

VS also promised to take action against all other mafias ---- forest mafia, sandalwood mafia, education mafia, sandmine mafia ---- in the state.

On his arrival at Kerala Bhavan, VS, clad in his trademark Malayalee white "mundu" and kurta, was given a tumultuous welcome by his supporters in the capital.
