After drawing the ire of Christians, the Ron Howard-directed Da Vinci Code is creating a flutter in the Muslim community. A section of Muslims said Christ was a Prophet of Islam and they would not tolerate any disrespect to him.

“Christ is the Prophet of Islam (Hazrat) and respecting all Prophets is mandatory and obligatory for Muslims,” said Suhail Razvi, secretary of the Raza Academy, representing Sunni Barelivei Muslims, quoting Quran.

The Raza Academy, along with 11 Ulemas, and the Christian Council members, met Commissioner of Police AN Roy  seeking a total ban on the movie in the city.

“Either the movie will have to be banned or the objectionable parts (of references to the marriage of Christ) have to be omitted. Islam per se bans movie photography or videography,” said Razvi.

The Muslim community’s ire against the movie is directly drawn from the references in Quran.

“We are seeking a ban on the movie simply because it hurts our sentiments. If our voice is not heard, then we will do everything what we can do within the legal limits to stop the film,’ said Razvi. Maulana Saeed Noori, who led Muslims in the anti-Danish cartoon protests told the Commissioner that “they solidly stood behind the Christians on the Da Vinci issue as Jesus was a revered prophet in Islam, too’’.

They told Roy that they would not hesitate to take to the streets. The police chief reportedly assured the delegation that he would convey to authorities of the possible law and order issues.

Other organisations have also come out in open. Maulana Mansoor Ali Khan, general secretary, All-India Sunni Jamiyatulma said, “Its release will hurt the Christian and Muslim communities’ sentiments.”

Muslim scholar Asgar Ali Engineer said, “The world of art and research is totally different from the world of faith. If the film which is based on the novel whose author claim it to be a work of historical research, then it should not be banned. But if it’s just done to ridicule or hurt the feeling of a particular community, then it should not be tolerated.’’
