MUMBAI: Residents of Haseena Nagar in Chembur are spending sleepless nights since the girl started spilling names of her neighbours — even her grandfather and uncles — for allegedly raping her. On last count, the 14-year-old identified 21 people and claimed that 90 people had raped her over two years.

On Sunday evening, she and her father lodged a complaint at the RCF police station. By Monday evening, the police had taken all the 21 persons she had identified in custody, booked them under Sections 376 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for sexual abuse, and started interrogating them. The girl will be sent for a medical examination on Tuesday.

One of the accused is a local maulana known as Janab. Rehana claimed that two other local girls had been witnesses to some of the rapes.

Meanwhile, the relatives of those who have been kept in police custody for over 36 hours were at the police station the whole day.

“First, how can a 14-year-old be raped 90 times and still be this normal. Also, my husband has been in the police custody for the whole day. The police haven’t taken any action. We have been waiting to know what is happening,” said Saira Shiekh, a neighbour.

The girl claimed she used to be lured by chocolates and then raped. “I was scared to say anything as the men used to threaten me but now I’m not scared,” she said.

DCP zone VI Ravindra Sengaokar said the girl had come to Mumbai an year ago. “She claims that two people back in Allahabad have also raped her. She was living with her grandfather in Haseena Nagar. She told her father about the rapes on May 4,” he said.

A Tale Of Vendetta?

Neighbours and relatives claimed that the girl’s father is trying to settle personal scores. They said he had raped a local three-year-old in 1993, beaten up by neighbours and relatives, and thrown out of the area.

They said he had returned to live in the neighbourhood after five years. The ’93 case is still being heard at the Bombay High Court. “I’m sure that this is just a way to take a revenge for what had happened to him at that time,” said a neighbour.

The girl's father, a tailor at Gautam Nagar in Ghatkopar, said he would not spare anybody. “I am still being harassed for a rape that I didn’t commit. These people who have raped my daughter will not go free,” he said.
