NEW DELHI: Delhi’s designer dreams have been shattered. It began with 1 MG and 2 MG Road being targeted by the MCD bulldozers and now the Supreme Court has ordered construction work to be stopped at Emporio and Promenade along with three other properties till it receives an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

Both Emporio and Promenade were being developed as fashion high streets in the Capital. While Indian designers like JJ Valaya, Rajesh Pratap, Abraham and Thakore and Adarsh Gill had already booked shop spaces at these malls designed by architect Mohit Gujral many international luxury brands were rumored to have been negotiating with DLF, the developers of the property. But the flouting of norms by building developers has wiped off the dream of creating a Saks Fifth Avenue-like one-stop destination in Delhi.

For international luxury brands like Prada, Gucci, Versace and Salvatore Ferragamo that were supposed to hold talks with DLF, these impediments are certainly not an inviting proposition.

Adds a spokesperson for The Leading Brands of the World, “ Most international brands were probably watching the progress before committing. The luxury spaces being developed were definitely a boost to brands that wanted to have a stand-alone presence. But with the construction of these spaces being put on hold, it brings us back to yet another question of where can these brands set up their retail destinations?”

Says designer Adarsh Gill, “The news has been very disappointing. I have already paid my advance and I don’t know what the future course of events would be. But imagine the impression it creates on the foreign brands wanting to come in. It is a setback to showcasing India in the right light.”

Adds Devyani Raman, CEO, Leading Brands of the World, “In view of the recent developments, the question a brand asks both the developer and the government is how did this happen? Such sudden changes reflect ambiguity in the system. Brands operating in India need to build their market confidence and together with the government and retail developers showcase India as a secure and promising market to operate in.”
