It is a rainmaker…well almost. It condenses and captures moisture to convert it into drinking water. This unique gadget can make water from the air we breathe-at the rate of 0.4 kw electricity per litre. It was launched in Mumbai on Tuesday at World Trade Centre.

Commissioned specially for the Indian Army, the first machine was installed in India recently by the Airwater Corporation, a Florida-based company which manufactures the gadget in Israel. The company’s Indian counterpart, Watermaker (India) Pvt Ltd, will market the gadget.

“It has various capacities and comes in different models capable of producing from 50 litres a day to 5,000 litres. It can also operate on a solar system energy supply, which makes it fully mobile as a unit,” said Micheal Zwebner, president and CEO of AirWater Corp.

And there were other gadgets on display too, in the form of refrigerators, which can make water from atmosphere and other smaller gadgets for household use, he said.

These gadgets supply drinking water after distilling and purifying it, but can supply water for washing separately as well as for showers.

“The gadget is particularly useful in coastal regions like Mumbai, which has very high moisture content in the air. Many of these gadgets are working very successfully in Sri Lanka and helped them to
tackle the drinking water crisis after the Tsunami,” Zwebner said.
