MUMBAI: The situation in Vakola, the scene of inter-group clashes on Thursday evening, is tense but under control.
 
The State Reserve Police Force has been deployed to maintain peace in the area, which witnessed riots between Maharashtrians and North Indians.
 
According to the police, on Thursday evening, some North Indians assaulted Maharashtrian youth at Dhobi Talao area in Vakola, Santa Cruz (East).
 
Shortly afterwards, the youth returned with a huge group and assaulted the North Indians.
 
A crowd descended on Vakola police station to lodge a complaint. According to eyewitnesses, the police refused to register a complaint, but following political intervention, complaints were lodged.
 
When both groups were returning around 11 pm, they again got into an altercation and damaged shops and homes.
 
Furniture from some shops and residences was thrown on to the roads.
 
DCP S Shinde then decided to summon the SRPF.
 
The situation has been described as “under control”.
