LONDON: Britain’s Prince Harry might serve in Iraq if defence chiefs and royal aides allow it, amid concerns that he would become a “trophy target” for insurgents there, reports said on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who is third in line to the throne, hopes to become an Armoured Reconnaissance Troop Leader at the forefront of Army operations.

He will move into the historic Blues and Royals regiment after completing his Sandhurst training in April, the Telegraph reported on Sunday.

The Cavalry are expected to be deployed to Iraq in the future. “It’s fair to say that if his squadron goes to Iraq, he will probably go with it,” an MoD spokesperson was quoted as saying.

However, another media report said there was concern in MoD that the Prince might become a “trophy target” for rebels, endangering his life as well the lives of the troops at his side.

But Harry does not want any special treatment and has threatened to quit the British army if he is not allowed to join fellow soldiers in a war zone, the Daily Mail reported.

“If I am not allowed to join my unit in a war zone, I will hand in my uniform,” he was quoted as telling  senior officers before his passing-out from Sandhurst military academy.
