MUMBAI: Biryani, mutton, chicken, aloo-gobi and palak-paneer—a big, warm meal at Jodhpur’s Taj on Thursday seemed to have cast away some of the gloom of a dingy cell for actor Salman Khan.

His family at Galaxy Apartments in Bandra seemed to be coming around. “I can’t say how happy we are. It’s not that we are going to celebrate. It has brought relief. I can imagine how Salman would be feeling after getting the news that he has been released,” said the actor’s father Salim.

He said initially the family had not told Salman that his mother Salma was hospitalised. “I had asked Sohail to tell him quietly and that there was nothing to worry about,” he said.

Salma had collapsed at their Panvel farmhouse and was admitted to Lilavati Hospital.

“She’s now back at home and is all right. She’s naturally happy that Salman is released,” said Salim.

Later in the evening, Salman, with girlfriend Katrina Kaif and sister Alvira, left Jodhpur in a Flying One Club chartered flight while brother Sohail, Govinda, Sajid Nadiadwala, David Dhawan, director Rumi Jaffrey (who’s directing him in God You Are Great) were scheduled to take the delayed 9pm Indian Airlines flight.

Sisupal Singh, the man who stood surety for Khan’s bail, just cannot stop talking about him. “When Salman left the cell, he gave some of his dresses, including his T-shirts, to his cell mate Mahesh,” he said on Thursday.

Singh, originally a Jodhpur resident, has produced films like Hatyaara and Dada. Salman had to furnish two bail bonds of Rs 1 lakh each.
