NEW DELHI: The central government said on Friday that the demand for a “good conduct undertaking” from two Thane municipal schoolteachers seeking leave to go for Hajj was “unprecedented and uncalled for”.

Reacting to the report published in DNA on Friday, E Ahamed, minister of state for external affairs, made it clear that there are no such instructions from the Centre.

“Nobody is required to give any such undertaking,” he said. “This is the work of an overzealous official. Had I known about it, I would have intervened.” Ahamed is also minister in charge of Hajj.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Minorities reacted strongly against Lata Sanap, the education officer who demanded the undertaking. Its chairman, Hamid Ansari, said the commission would take up the issue if the teachers write to it.

He said, “This is totally wrong and high-handed. Every Indian is permitted to go abroad without any undertaking, whether it is for shopping, business, or a pilgrimage.”

The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board also objected to Sanap’s behaviour. “Such an attitude is not expected of an education officer,” said board spokesman Kamal Farooqui. “Singling out people of a particular community is demeaning and discriminatory. Nobody asks for such an undertaking from those who’re going on a pilgrimage to Nankana Sahib, or to the Vatican.”
